Building is the general name of buildings and structures. It is an artificial environment created by people in order to meet the needs of social life, using the material and technical means they have mastered, and applying certain scientific laws, geomantic ideas and aesthetic principles.

In order to clearly express usability, some classifications will distinguish buildings from non-building structures that people do not occupy for a long time.In addition, some architectural scholars also deliberately subdivide the buildings created by people consciously into"architecture"in order to avoid confusion. It should be noted that sometimes buildings may also be extended to include"non-building structures",such as bridges, electric towers, tunnels, etc.

Buildings have broad and narrow meanings. In a broad sense, buildings refer to all things that are built manually, including both houses and structures.

In a narrow sense, buildings refer to houses, excluding structures.A house is a space with a foundation, wall, roof, door and window, which can shelter people from the wind and rain, and can be used for living, working, studying, entertainment, storage or other activities.Architecture related majors refer to the meaning of buildings in a narrow sense. The best explanation of the concept of buildings studied by"architecture"majors is Lao Tzu's:"When there is no room, the windows are used. When there is no room, there is a room."This is undoubtedly the clearest and most direct statement of the concept of buildings in a narrow sense.

Unlike buildings, there is no internal space for people to use in structures.People generally do not directly carry out production and living activities inside, such as chimney, water tower, bridge, dam, sculpture, etc.
